When I consider all that is happening in my own country and around the world, my little concerns about my life and internship seem so inconsequential. What can I do about any of it?
The current US administration is going around just breaking things and people will suffer because of it. Villainizing vulnerable populations and stoking the fires of hate against honest people seeking a better life. The ongoing genocide of Palestinians and several others that have been ongoing in Congo, Sudan, etc. its all just so overwhelming. With so many catastrophes in so many places it is easy to feel hopeless. Attacks on so many fronts at once make it exhausting to keep up.
I think it is important to be aware of things, but it is easy to spread ourselves too thin. So, I focus on what I can do. I need to care for my family and finish school. Those are my main priorities. I also can have a direct impact on the people I work with in my internship. Beyond that I can make phone calls to my congress people both nationally and in my state. That often seems pointless, but I still do it. Local elections are coming up and that’s where I can actually have an impact.
I’m just one person with so many responsibilities, but I can do these small things. Having one or two primary causes is all that most people can handle, I know that more that will burn me out. I will focus on the things closest to my heart and do what I can to support and encourage others in their endeavors to promote justice here and abroad.
